The Richmond Habitat experience enriches classroom learning by engaging students in meaningful service to their community. Students are able to apply academic skills to help solve real-world issues such as the issue of affordable housing, linking established learning objectives with genuine needs. They lead the process, with adults as partners, applying critical thinking and problem-solving skills to community concerns such as poverty and substandard housing.

To learn how your school can be a part of Richmond Habitat’s High School or Collegiate Builds, contact Van Garber @

GET INVOLVED

Become a Volunteer
More than 31,000 volunteers have built with Richmond Habitat since our founding in 1986; that’s over 62,000 hands that have touched the lives of Richmond families.

Your time has a real value by keeping construction costs low through free labor and services.
On average volunteers save homeowners $50,000 – 60,000 on their mortgage payments.

Volunteers range from students to retirees, from skilled trades people to weekend do-it-yourselfers, from church, synagogue and mosque members to colleagues and co-workers from large and small businesses. The common thread is the desire to take part in something big and see the tangible results – to help build decent, modest homes for low income, working families

Faith Relations
Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical housing ministry based on Christian principles and subscribing to the Theology of the Hammer, the belief that true religion puts faith and love into action and suggests that in bringing diverse people together, picking up a hammer and building houses, we become instruments that manifest God's love.  Habitat is a natural partner with the faith community.  Faith partners are the primary partners in Habitat's work as members put their faith into action. Habitat for Humanity and faith partners seek to serve God by serving our neighbors in need.

Partners by Faith is an outreach initiative aimed at involving congregations of all faiths, sizes and means in Habitat’s ministry.

Habitat partner families benefit from prayer, funding and volunteer support that faith partners provide.  Together, faith partners and Habitat are working toward the elimination of substandard housing in Metro Richmond. For more information e-mail
van@richmondhabitat.org.

How to Volunteer

All first time volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation, held on the 2nd Saturday of every month, at 9:30 a.m., at St. John United Church of Christ at 503 N. Lombardy St. (corner of Lombardy & Monument Ave. at Stuart Circle) Click here for map.

Arrival time for all build sites is 7:45 a.m. Please have all waiver forms completed before arriving for work.

Click here for waiver form or minor waiver form (ages 14-17).

For safety and liability reasons, all volunteers working on a construction site must be at least 16 years old. Youth (ages 14 and 15) who are too young to swing a hammer on a construction site can volunteer at the Richmond Habitat Restore, located at 1901 Roane Street, off School Street and Chamberlayne Avenue.

Want to help but can’t swing a hammer? Join a Richmond Habitat Committee, our Speaker's Bureau or help out in the Richmond Habitat ReStore.

For more information on all of our volunteer opportunities, or to sign up as a volunteer, call our Volunteer Coordinator at 232-7001 or email april@richmondhabitat.org.

Global Village Program
Habitat for Humanity International’s Global Village trips give participants a unique opportunity to become active partners with people of another culture. Team members work alongside members of the host community, raising awareness of the burden of poverty housing and building decent, affordable housing worldwide. As partners, team members help build a true “global village” of love, homes, communities and hope!

Carmen Daily, Richmond Habitat’s former Director of Family Services, will be leading a trip to Costa Rica June 15-June 24th. If interested, please go to www.habitat.org, click on Volunteer Programs, Global Village trips, and check out available trips! Or, contact Carmen Dailey at cmdailey@verizon.net for more information.
