Partner Family Spotlight: The Thompson Family

IMG_20140511_130602Patrick Thompson is a veteran of the United States Army.  At the age of 23, he enlisted to provide a better life for his wife Christine, and especially for his newborn daughter, Samantha.

During his nine years in the military, Patrick was stationed all over the world including in Germany, Iraq and Afghanistan.

While deployed, Patrick served as an infantryman, seeing a lot of combat from the frontline.  During his deployment in Afghanistan he was injured in combat, disabling him and preventing him from further service in the military.

Since retiring, Patrick and Christine have struggled.  Patrick still suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and has had a hard time adjusting to being back home.  Two months after medically retiring, Patrick, Christine and their now two daughters became homeless.  Currently, they are living in a very small, temporary two-bedroom apartment, and without this opportunity would soon be homeless again.

Thankfully, the Thompson’s learned about Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity’s Habitat for Heroes program through their local Veterans Service Organization.  They took a chance, applied and were accepted as future homeowners.

Through this program, the Thompson’s will purchase a safe, affordable home in Midlothian, VA.  They will complete 10 financial and homeownership classes to ensure they have the tools they need to thrive as homeowners, and will complete 200 hours of “sweat equity” helping to rehab their home and the homes of other partner families.

Once they purchase their home, they will pay an affordable, 0% interest mortgage saving them thousands of dollars over the course of being a homeowner.  More importantly, Patrick, Christine, and their two daughters, Samantha and Elizabeth, will have the stability and security they are desperately searching for.

It is a dream come true for us to have a forever home,” says Patrick, “We would not be ready to purchase a home otherwise and we are so grateful for this opportunity.
